At Serrão Rejuvenation Center, our entire team is committed to caring for women’s bodies, helping each patient to more fully understand her own health and make the decisions that will best serve her in the long run. Doing so often requires an expanded vocabulary of female anatomy. Here are the terms you should know when considering a cosmetic gynecology procedure:

Mons Pubis

The mons pubis, also known as the mons or the pubic mound, is the rounded, fatty tissue that covers the pubic symphysis and the pubic bones. The size of the mons pubis will vary depending on the level of hormones and body fat.

Clitoral Hood

The clitoral hood is a fold of skin that covers the clitoris. The function of the hood is to protect the sensitive tissue of the clitoris from excessive stimulation. When aroused, the clitoral hood retracts, due to the swelling of the clitoris.

Clitoral Shaft

The clitoral shaft is the internal portion of the clitoris. While the head of the clitoris is exposed just above the urethra’s opening, the shaft is covered by the clitoral hood. The clitoral shaft thickens when the individual is sexually aroused.

Urinary Opening

Also known as the urinary meatus, the urinary opening is the anatomical location where the urethra opens. In women, this is where urine exits the body. The urinary opening is located behind the clitoris and in front of the vagina.

Vaginal Opening

Also known as the vaginal vestibule, the vaginal opening is a muscular canal that reaches from the cervix to the outside of the body. It is much larger than the urethral opening and protected by the labia. The vaginal opening is surrounded or partially covered by the hymen. It is through this opening that vaginal secretions exit.

Labia Majora

The labia majora, also known as the outer lips, are the two folds that extend from the mons pubis to the perineum.

Labia Minora

The labia minora, also known as the inner lips, are the two folds between the labia majora, located on the side of the vaginal opening. The color, shape and size of the labia can vary greatly from person to person. In some cases, the labia minora may visibly protrude when standing.

Hymen

The hymen surrounds or partially covers the vaginal opening. This membrane can stretch or tear as a result of a variety of different activities.

Perineum

The perineum is the region between the anus and the vulva. Women who have a natural childbirth may incur perineal tears or an episiotomy.

Anus

The anus is the external opening of the rectum, located behind the perineum. The primary function of the anus is defecation.

This is just a brief overview of the female anatomy terms you may come across while researching cosmetic gynecology procedures. We hope this has offered some clarity and insight into this highly personal region of the body.

Women and Sexual Gratification

As a sexual biological organism, women are superior to men. Women are multiorgasmic. The female sexual response cycle is unimpeded by a required refractory period that prevents successive orgasms in the male.

Principal understanding of the physiology of the human sexual response emanates from observational research studies by William H. Masters, M.D. and Virginia E. Johnson. The researchers tested 382 women and 312 men in more than 10,000 episodes of sexual activity. They also studied more than 7,500 cycles (one cycle is an individual episode of sexual activity) of female sexual response during sexual relations.  They were the first researchers to put forth a four stage model that described and explained these natural physiologic changes. The four stages are excitation, plateau, orgasm, and resolution.
